Admiral Charles Cooper Penrose FitzGerald, Royal Navy (30 April, 1841 – 11 August, 1921) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

FitzGerald was appointed in command of the frigate Inconstant 24 August, 1880, as Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral The Earl of Clanwilliam, commanding the Detached Squadron for Particular Service.[1] He left this command on 16 November, 1882.[2]

Appointed as captain of Inflexible from 18 July 1889 to 19 September, 1889.[3]

He was appointed in command of the second class battleship Collingwood on 7 November, 1889.[4]

Fitzgerald was appointed Captain Superintendent of Pembroke Royal Dockyard on 28 January, 1893, commanding this facility first from the deck of the Bellerophon from that date, and transferring to the Rupert on 5 July, 1893. He left Rupert and the Dockyard on 23 March, 1895.[5]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 February, 1895, vice Kerr.[6] He gave up his command at Sheerness on 23 March and went on Half Pay.

He handed over duties to Rear-Admiral James A. T. Bruce on 23 December, 1899, and struck his flag in Barfleur on 4 January, 1900. He arrived back in England on 3 February.

He was appointed President of the Committee on Torpedo Boat Destroyers on 15 March, 1902 vice Rawson. Also about 1902, he was appointed to the Committee respecting Subsidies to British Steam Ship Companies.[8]

FitzGerald was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 20 February, 1905, vice Seymour.[9] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 3 March.[10]

Two sons fought in the Battle of Jutland: Robert as gunnery officer of the light cruiser Birkenhead and John as torpedo officer in Collingwood.[11]
