Cecil Russell Hains Harvey

Commander (retired) Cecil Russell Hains Harvey, O.B.E. (7 April, 1887 – 17 August, 1933) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Harvey was born in Southsea. He listed his mother as his guardian when he joined the May 1902 entry class at H.M.S. Britannia.

Harvey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1909. He would qualify in navigation in December 1910. In April 1911, he underwent surgery for appendicitis at Plymouth Naval Hospital at his own risk and expense. He was found fit on 27 June. It had not gone perfectly, however, as he was admitted to Queensferry Hospital on 18 January 1912. He was made whole and discharged to his ship on 27 February. In December 1912, he was cleared of blame when Ringdove damaged piles at Invergordon Pier.

Harvey served as navigating officer in the scout cruiser Blonde from September 1913 until being appointed to the depot ship Greenwich as navigator in May, 1916. On 27 September he was ordered to the light cruiser Newcastle, in which ship he served the remainder of the war, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1917.

Harvey proceeded to Belgium in 1920. In 1923, he helped compile a report on the Maldive Islands.

He was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Commander upon his relief on 21 July, 1929.
