Following several days of competitive examinations which commenced on 24 November, 1886 fifty-seven candidates for naval cadetships were accepted for the January, 1887 intake term at the training ship H.M.S. Britannia in the following order of merits.[1]

For some reason, Robert Wilberforce Myburgh is absent in the article, but his service record clearly indicates his presence in this term.

From September 1903 entries were also made to the Royal Naval College, Osborne under the Selborne Scheme. The Britannia was closed in July 1905 after the May entry, which was sent to Bermuda with the January entry. The following two terms under the old scheme were sent straight to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
