Commander (retired) Caledon Charles Alexander, (29 April, 1895 – 1985) served in the Royal Navy. His birth year is given as 1895 in one service record, and 1894 in another.

Life & Career

The son of Colonel Harvey Alexander, retired.

He served in the pre-dreadnought H.M.S. Britannia from September 1912 to 5 May, 1915. He then served in Ostrich and the Acorn Class destroyer Comet until January, 1917, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 August, 1916.

On 1 March 1917 he went to Dolphin for instruction in submarines. On 2 June, he was appointed to the H.M.S. J 5. He apparently served in her until 1921, and perhaps temporarily in command for a brief period ending on 25 March 1917.

Alexander was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 August, 1924.

On 25 April, 1927 he was at Haslar Hospital with chronic appendicitis. He was declared fit two days later, but was sent back on 4 May. It was decided that he needed seven weeks.

In December, 1928, he was not recommended in an evaluation, perhaps penned by Rear-Admiral (S) Henry E. Grace.

Alexander was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 15 January, 1939.

World War II

Alexander was mentioned in despatches for distinguished service in Malaya in 1942. He was captured by the Japanese and eventually liberated.

Reverted to the Retired List on 22 June, 1946.
