Arthur Stopford
Vice-Admiral (retired) THE HONOURABLE Arthur Stopford, C.M.G., R.N. (29 April, 1879 – 25 May, 1955) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Stopford was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 65 on 11 July, 1899.[1]
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1900.
Stopford was appointed to Invincible on 6 October 1908 to serve as her gunnery officer on her commissioning. On 4 January, 1911, he was re-appointed to the ship as first and gunnery officer. Superseded on 16 March, Stopford went to Excellent for two months to requalify in gunnery. This done, he spent six weeks in temporary service under the Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth and ten months as first and gunnery officer in Triumph in the Mediterranean before being promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1912.
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1917.
Stopford was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cleopatra on 23 December, 1919.[2]
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 18 May, 1929 and placed on the Retired List on 19 May.
Stopford was promoted to the rank of {ViceRN}} (retired) on 11 February, 1934.
