Commander (retired) Anthony William Loveband, R.N. (29 April, 1884 – 21 April, 1942) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Instow, North Devon,[1] Loveband ranked thirty-third among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2282 marks.[2]

Loveband was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 July, 1906. Late that year, he was appointed to the pre-dreadnought battleship Africa. A 1908 inspection would reveal that he had an excessive wine bill, and quarterly reports were demanded on him. A marked reduction was the result, and these were discontinued in 1909.[3]

In March 1910 he was admitted to Chatham Hospital for tonsillitis. He was discharged, fit on the 18th. On 1 August 1911 he was admitted to Haslar Hospital to be observed for epilepsy. He was discharged on 7 September and invalided from his present appointment, which was to qualify in torpedoes at H.M.S. Vernon. He was retired as unfit on that date.[4]

Loveband was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 July, 1914. When war broke out, he was sent to Vernon to work in wireless telegraphy. On 20 June 1917, he was sent to the Portsmouth Signal School. Described as "rather delicate", he reverted to the Retired List on 1 January, 1921.[5]

Loveband was promoted to the rank of Commander on 29 April, 1924.[6]

World War II

FIt for shore service only, Loveband was made a technical officer at the Portsmouth Signal School in 1939, but he died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 21 April, 1942.[7]
