Vice-Admiral Alister Francis Beal, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O. (21 March, 1875 – 18 October, 1962) was an officer in the Royal Navy

Life & Career

Upon passing out of Britannia in July, 1890, he'd gained seven months' time for his performance, and was appointed to the armoured cruiser Immortalité in the Channel Squadron on 22 July. He was then appointed to Warspite, additional, in the Pacific, but displayed such disobedience and neglect of duty en route in Garnet that he lost two months time as punishment. His time in Warspite ended when she paid off on 24 June, 1893. Beal's evaluation from Captain Lambton noted, "G[ood] physique, rather lazy, improving."[1]

Beal was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in December, 1896 and was re-appointed to Volage in the Training Squadron.[2]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1908.[3]

Beal was commander of Princess Royal when she was commissioned at Devonport on 14 November, 1912 under Captain Osmond de B. Brock.[4]

Great War

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1915.[5]

He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Weymouth in February, 1918.[6]

He was made Captain of light cruiser Chatham in July 1923 when she was loaned to the New Zealand Station, becoming Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Division in August 1923.[7]

He retired on 24 November, 1926 and was advanced to Vice-Admiral on the Retired List, dated 1 April, 1931.[8]
