Alec Murray Carrie

Lieutenant-Commander Alec Murray Carrie (2 March, 1895 – 12 November, 1925) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of stockbroker George Carrie.

Carrie was promoted to the rank of Midshipman on 15 September, 1912 upon passing out of the Training Establishment. His first ship was the battleship Bellerophon of the First Battle Squadron. He remained in her until being appointed to the destroyer Kale on 2 June, 1915.

On 1 November 1915 he undertook instruction in submarines. From December, he started serving in boats tender to Bonaventure. By February 1916, this was specifically C 10. On 5 June 1916, he moved into the larger E 44 and he was was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1916.

In December 1917, he was sent to Dolphin for more training in submarines, including the Periscope Course which had been instituted only recently. He emerged on 23 January 1918 and was appointed to C 21 under Maidstone.

Carrie received his first command appointment, albeit temporary, in E 29 on 26 July 1918. In October, he moved to another boat (illegible in his Service Record) for one month and then returned to command E 29.

Carrie was appointed in command of the submarine L 5 on 22 July, 1919.

Carrie was appointed to the battlecruiser Hood on 25 July, 1923 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1924. He remained in the ship until 1 November, 1924.

On 24 November, 1924, Carrie was appointed in command of the submarines M 1 and M 2 in reserve.

Carrie died when M 1, which was operating submerged in the English Channel, was sunk in a collision with S.S. Vidar on 12 November, 1925.
