Rear-Admiral Alan Ramsay Dewar (8 February, 1887 – 5 November, 1972) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Dewar was the Gunnery Officer of H.M.S. Hercules at Jutland[1] and later in the war in Warspite. Kenneth Dewar and Alfred Charles Dewar were his older brothers.

Life & Career

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1906 in the midst of a stint in command of the destroyer Foyle[2]

He served as gunnery officer in Formidable from 30 April 1912 to 6 January, 1914 when he moved to Hercules.

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1915.[3]

Deward fought in Hercules at the Battle of Jutland. He quit her for Warspite on 9 January, 1917.[4]

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918.[5]

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1920.[6]

Dewar married Valentine Ford, the daughter of Mrs. Ford and the late Mr. James Johnston Ford at St. Baldred's Church, North Berwick on 18 October, 1923.

Dewar served in Royal Sovereign as gunnery officer from 10 April, 1922 through 8 April, 1924.[7]

Dewar served as Naval Attaché in Washington, D.C. in 1933.

Dewar was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 January, 1938.[8]
