Construction & Delivery

The ship was projected to cost 1,162,366 pounds.[7]

Service

Natal was commissioned by Captain Stuart Nicholson at Chatham on 5 March, 1907, for service in the Fifth Cruiser Squadron.[8]

In 1910, Natal was the best gunnery ship of the sixteen in Home Fleet, Second Division and the Second Cruiser Squadron, scoring 90.48 – well ahead of the average 47.567.[9]

She recommissioned at Sheerness on 17 September, 1912.[10] In mid-1913, she was operating with the Second Cruiser Squadron.[11]

Natal collided with a fishing vessel on 5 June, 1913 in foggy conditions. Their Lordships were unable to concur with the opinion of the Court of Inquiry which had determined that the 10 knots Natal was making under command of Captain John F. E. Green was excessive in the poor visibility.[12]

Alterations

In October 1914, the ship was to be given thirteen Pattern 1582 Electric Radiators to warm cabins whose stoves could not be used for heating them.[13]

Radio

In mid-1913, it was decided to purchase a Type 9 Cruiser Auxiliary set for the ship.[14]
