John Henry Loftie

Captain John Henry Loftie, (7 October, 1874 – 17 January, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in County Armagh, the son of H. P. Loftie, who requested on 1 May 1890 that his son be called J. Henry Loftie. Admiral Fairfax approved this request.

Loftie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1896.

On 3 December, 1903, Loftie was appointed to Furious as first and gunnery officer. After an accident that damaged a 12-pdr gun mounting in February 1904, the Admiralty expressed displeasure at a want of supervision on his part.

Loftie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1907 while in the last month of a three-year appointment as first and gunnery officer in Juno.

Loftie served as executive officer in the battleship Bellerophon from January 1911 to 28 December, 1912.

After paying off Glory in April 1914, Loftie was appointed to H.M.S. Vivid for the Boys Training Establishment, where he remained until 4 January, 1917.

Loftie was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 11 October, 1920.
