Henry John Carr

Admiral Henry John Carr, Royal Navy, Retired (6 July, 1839 – 18 July, 1914) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born the son of the Canon Henry Byne Carr, Henry John Carr entered the Navy in 1852 and would serve 47 years.[1]
Carr was promoted to the rank Lieutenant with a seniority of 11 February, 1860.
As a Lieutenant, Carr was mentioned in despatches for his gallantry when the Bombay burned.[2]
In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 5 February, 1872, on 8 February of that year Carr was promoted to the rank of Commander with seniority of 29 December, 1871.[3]
He served in Monarch and Implacable.
Carr was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 October, 1879.[4]
Carr was appointed in command of H.M.S. Terror as senior officer at Bermuda on 1 January, 1892.[5] He was appointed Admiral Superintendent of Devonport Dockyard on 3 November, 1896.[6]
In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, he was placed on the Retired List on 6 July, 1899.[7] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1901,[8] and was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 16 June, 1904.[9]
Carr died at Heathlands, Long Cross, Chertsey.[10]
