John Sutherland Black
Commander (retired) John Sutherland Black, R.N. (2 December, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Served in Zealandia from May 1914 to April 1916, then the destroyer Hind until May 1917 and then in Obdurate from 3 June 1917 to 14 December, 1918, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1918.[1]
On 13 June 1919 he was charged in a Court Martial aboard H.M.S. Glory, with having been drunk on shore. He was dismissed the ship and severely reprimanded. He spent some time at Haslar being treated for alcoholism. Quarterly reports were demanded on him, which were generally favourable except for concerns about behaviour ashore. Through January 1921 the reports seemed to dispel immediately concern.[2]
Black was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 July, 1922 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1926.[3]
World War II
Commanded H.M.S. Korongo, a shore base in West Africa from 1943
Black was promoted to the rank of Commander in May, 1946.
