John Casement
Rear-Admiral John Casement, Royal Navy (22 July, 1854 – 8 June, 1910) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
In 1884, Casement was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal.[1]
Casement was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1891.[2]
Casement was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1898.[3]
He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Æolus on 11 July, 1899, for manoeuvres.[4]
Casement was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser H.M.S. Amphion from 20 September, 1900 to 25 May, 1904. On 24 November, 1901, he grounded her off Chatham Island in the Galapagos and was chastised for a lack of navigational care in the event.
He served as captain of Goliath from January to May, 1905, overlapping to some degree with an appointment to Duncan from March 1905 and lasting until December 1906.
He was appointed Captain Superintendent of Sheerness Dockyard on 4 May, 1907.[5]
On 21 October, 1907, he was seriously injured while supervising the landing of a boom. Two days later it was reported that his recovery seemed rapid and sure and that he was "practically out of danger".[6]
Casement was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 January, 1908, vice Kirby.[7] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 January, 1909.[8]
