H.M.S. Vulcan was completed as a second-class torpedo boat carrier, but was converted to a submarine depot ship before the Great War.

Service

After serving as a torpedo depot ship in the Mediterranean, Vulcan arrived at Spithead under the command of Michael Culme-Seymour to pay off on 14 April, 1907.

She was converted to a depot ship in 1908-09.^{[Citation needed]} She was commissioned in that role at Chatham on 5 January, 1909.

In mid-1913, she was in Dundee supporting a the "C" class submarines of the Seventh Submarine Flotilla.

She continued serving with the Seventh Submarine Flotilla 1914-16, then for various flotillas at Humber, Berehaven and Blyth.
