After a career in financial services, Martin Gibson returned to academic study, completing an MLitt in War Studies, which was awarded with distinction, and then a PhD on British Strategy and Oil, 1914-1923 at Glasgow University.
The dissertation for his Masters, The debate over the British Navy’s switch from coal to oil fuel, 1904-14, was awarded the Ewing Prize for year's best Modern History dissertation at Glasgow University. It was subsequently published as one of the chapters in the book of the papers delivered at an academic conference
