H.M.S. Edgar was completed in 1893, name ship for her class of nine first-class protected cruisers.
Service
In early 1899, Edgar lost a funnel in a gale. She was expected to be ready for sea again on 2 March, when she would go out to the Mediterranean with a new crew for the battleship Royal Oak.[8] After handing over his ship, Captain Walter Hodgson Bevan Graham was informed by Admiralty Letter that the ship's engine room was "unfavourable" when inspected by A. Fremantle on 20 March.[9]
She recommissioned at Portsmouth on 18 March, 1913 to join the Training Squadron in Queenstown.[10]
