The veteran Admiral of the Fleet Sir Alexander Milne, Bart. G.G.B., K.C.B, now in his ninetieth year, is a very distinguished member of an old naval family. He was born in the year after Trafalgar, and entered the Royal Navy under King George the Third in 1817. Sir Alexander has held many important offices. He has served as Flag Captain at Devonport, Portsmouth and in the Channel Squadron (with Sir Charles Napier), has been Commander-in-Chief on the North American and West Indies and the Mediterranean stations, and has held office at the Admiralty, as a Naval Lord and as a senior Naval Lord. He was Chairman of the Committee of the Jubilee Offering to the Queen from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, attending at Windsor to make presentation personally to Her Majesty. Sir Alexander has been an Admiral of the Fleet since 1881. N&AI 20 March 1896
