Frame from an animation to display the gun deck of HMS Colossus. The two turrets, each with 2 12 inch 47 ton breech loading guns were protected inside a central armoured citadel, consisting of 18 inches of compound armour backed by teak. These were the first large breech loading guns used by the Royal Navy, and the loading mechanism was crude. The guns had to be trained onto the beams in order to line up with the loading rams which were external to the turrets. Reloading could take up to 3 minutes.
