On 24 November, 1914 Washington left Powerful and was appointed to the armoured cruiser Bacchante. He would remain with her until she was paid off on 10 February, 1916. He performed some work at the Mobilisation Division on the Admiralty War Staff before being appointed as Flag Commander in the troop ship H.M.S. Northbrook on 14 July, 1917.
