U.S.S. Viper was one of three Viper (or "B") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.
Service
Viper was launched on 30 March, 1907 sponsored by Mrs. Lawrence York Spear, and she was commissioned on 18 October, 1907 with Lieutenant D. C. Gingham in command. She reported to the Second Submarine Flotilla, Atlantic Fleet.
Viper was redesignated as B-1 on 17 November, 1911.
In 1916, all three "B" class boats were stationed in the Philippines in Manila Bay along with six "A" class boats, their crews living aboard their tenders Monadnock and Mohican.[5]
