U.S.S. Prairie was one of five Prairie Class auxiliary cruisers acquired and converted for use by the U.S. Navy.

Service

Prairie was purchased by the Navy on 6 April, 1898 from the Southern Pacific Company, and commissioned on 8 April with Commander Charles J. Train in command.
