George Lambart Atkinson-Willes

Admiral SIR George Lambart Atkinson-Willes, K.C.B., Royal Navy (13 July, 1847 – 25 December, 1921) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

CAREER Entered Navy, 1861; Captain, 1886; Admiral, 1901; served Abyssinian War in Naval Brigade, including action of Arogee and storming of Magdala, 1868 (despatches, promoted to Lieut, medal); as commodore commanded Training Squadron, 1895–97; Dockyard Reserve, Chatham, 1898–1900; ADC to HM Queen Victoria, 1899–1901, and to King Edward until promoted Rear-Adm.; Rear-Admiral in command Home Squadron and second in command of Home Fleet, 1902–03; Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, 1903; directed the operations of a mixed naval and military force which captured the Dervish stronghold of Illig, 1904; as Commander-in-Chief was present on Somali Coast, 1904, during the operations against the Mullah; retired 1912
