This photograph, published 31 Jan 1896, shows Rear Admiral A. H. Alington and his Flag-Lieutenant on board HMS Magnificent. Admiral Alington was at the time the second in command of the Channel Squadron, and of the officer who holds a position under him, somewhat analogous to the post of aide-de-camp in the land service. Rear Admiral Arthur Hildebrand Alington entered the Navy in 1852, and has seen service all over the world over, beginning with the Russian war of 1854-55. He hoisted his flag on board the “Empress of India” in April 1895, as second in command in the Channel, and on the 12th December turned over into the “Magnificent” on that splendid vessel being commissioned. Flag-Lieutenant William George Elmhurst Ruck-Keene entered the navy in 1880, and as a naval cadet saw service in the Egyptian war. Both of these officers have been awarded medals for saving life.
