Admiral of the Fleet SIR Charles Frederick Hotham, G.C.B., G.C.V.O., Royal Navy (20 March, 1843 – 22 March, 1925) was at the time of his death the senior Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 5 February, 1872, on 8 February of that year Hotham was promoted to the rank of Captain with seniority of 29 December, 1871.[1]

He was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 14 August, 1882.[2]

On 18 January, 1886, Hotham was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria, vice Erskine.[3]

Hotham was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 January, 1888, vice Grant.[4]

Hotham was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 September, 1893, vice Richards.[5]

On the occasion of the Queen's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 25 May, 1895.[6]

Hotham was appointed Commander-in-Chief at the Nore on 10 December, 1897.[7] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 13 January, 1899, vice Salmon.[8]

He was appointed a Knight Grand Cross in the Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) on 8 March, 1901.[9]

Hotham was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet, vice Lyons, on 30 August, 1903.[10]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, Hotham was placed on the Retired List on 20 March, 1913.[11]
