Said Norman MacLeod, one time Private Secretary to the Civil Lord of the Admiralty:

Pretyman was not the most congenial of my chiefs, but he was certainly the ablest and it was sheer bad luck that he never reached Cabinet rank.1

Pretyman was made Chairman of the Admiralty Reconstruction Committee by Sir Eric Geddes.
