In September 1914, it was decided that Faulknor should join the First Destroyer Flotilla as the half-flotilla leader and be fitted with a Mark II W/T set, longer mast, No. 2 set of flags and two additional signal ratings.[6]

In late November 1914, she was to be moved over to the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla, possibly as half-flotilla leader under Caroline while Swift was to undergo refit.[7]
