Commander (retired) Windham Mark Phipps-Hornby, R.N. (17 October, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Captain (eventually, Admiral) R. Phipps-Hornby.
He served in the armoured cruiser Hampshire on the China Station from 15 May 1924 and then was assigned to Warspite from 23 March 1915 to 14 April, 1916.[1]
Phipps-Hornby served in the light cruiser Chester from April, 1916 to May, 1917, seeing action in her at the Battle of Jutland when she screened the Third Battle Cruiser Squadron and, in turn, suffered mightily from German gunnery. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant dated 15 May, 1918, which was altered to 15 December, 1917.[2]
Phipps-Hornby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December, 1925.[3]
He served as torpedo officer in Hood from April 1929 to April 1930.[4]
Phipps-Hornby was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 18 August, 1932 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 17 October, 1936.[5]
World War II
Phipps-Hornby suffered appendicitis and an "anxiety state" in 1940, and nervous exhaustion in 1944.[6]
He was reverted to the Retired List on 21 January, 1945.[7]
