H.M.S. Achilles was an armour-plated steam frigate launched in 1863.

Service

Achilles served served in the Channel Fleet until 1868.

She commissioned at Devonport on 17 May 1877 for service in the Mediterranean.[1]

She re-commissioned at Devonport on 1 September, 1880 for service in the Channel Squadron.[2]

The ship visited the port of Mahon in Minorca, Spain from 10-18 March, 1882 under the command of George Stanley Bosanquet in company with H.M.S. Salamis.[3]

Achilles was sent to Malta as a depot ship in 1901, was renamed H.M.S. Hibernia around 1900 and then H.M.S. Egmont in March 1904. She remained in Malta until 1914.

She was ultimately sent back to Chatham.
