Lieutenant-Commander George Harley Pownall, R.N. (30 August, 1883 – 25 April, 1915) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Frank Pownall, barrister.
Pownall placed third among his term of naval cadets upon entry and first of sixty-one on passing out of Britannia in August 1899, earning 2042 of 2250 possible marks.[1]
Pownall was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1903.
Pownall was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1911.
Pownall was appointed as first officer in Egmont and in command of the Malta Submarine Flotilla on 22 August, 1913. He was still technically in this post when he died while serving as a Assistant Beach Master during disembarkation operations in the Dardanelles.
