Design & Construction

Ungalvanized steel construction[1] with one triple expansion engine and two locomotive boilers.[2]

These two ships were essentially enlarged editions of Schichau's standard torpedo boats meant to serve as flotilla or divisional leaders. Their increased size, roughly two-thirds again as large as the contemporary S 24 class torpedo boats, was used to accommodate the flotilla or divisional commander and his staff, as well as a much heavier gun armament.[3][4]

Performance

They were slightly faster than their S 7, S 24, and S 33 class contemporaries, and their greater size meant they were better seaboats in general.[5]

Armament

As Completed

  • Six 37mm Hotchkiss machine guns
  • Three 350mm torpedo tubes, four torpedoes

Post-1893

  • Three 50mm/40 caliber quick-firing guns
  • Three 350mm torpedo tubes, four torpedoes
