Unprotected Cruiser is a general term used for cruising vessels built with little to no armor protection, as distinct from protected cruisers built with a protective armored deck, or armored cruisers with a side belt of armor and a protective deck.[1]
As would be expected from such a broad definition, there was sometimes little to differentiate unprotected cruisers from smaller vessels such as sloops other than the classification practices of individual navies.
