H.M.S. Titania was building as a civil vessel, but was purchased in 1915 and converted to a submarine depot ship.

Titania completed conversion to a depot ship in November, 1915 and started with the Eleventh Submarine Flotilla, serving the submarines of the Eleventh Submarine Flotilla at Blyth 1915-1918 as they supported the Grand Fleet.[5]

At the end of 1920, she was serving as flagship of the China Submarine Flotilla.[6]

She was re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 9 February, 1924 as depot ship for the Fourth Submarine Flotilla.[7]

The ship was re-commissioned 5 November, 1926.[8]

Titania was re-commissioned at Chatham on 1 October, 1930 for work with the Sixth Submarine Flotilla. She remained at this through at least mid-1937.[9]
