H.M.S. Achilles was an armour-plated steam frigate launched in 1863.
Service
Achilles served served in the Channel Fleet until 1868.
She commissioned at Devonport on 17 May 1877 for service in the Mediterranean.[1]
She re-commissioned at Devonport on 1 September, 1880 for service in the Channel Squadron.[2]
Sent to Malta as a depot ship in 1901, she was renamed H.M.S. Hibernia in 1902 and then H.M.S. Egmont in March 1904. She remained in Malta until 1914.
Sent back to Chatham.
