Captain (retired) George Bernard Eldridge, C.B.E. (7 August, 1867 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Eldridge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1898.[1]

Eldridge was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Commander on 7 September, 1912.[2]

Eldridge served in the Great War, first as a coaling officer at Cromarty from August 1914 to March 1915, and then as a Boom Defence officer until September 1916, when he was lent to the Royal Canadian Navy for service as Senior Officer, Halifax. This loan became formal, and he served with the R.C.N. until July 1919, being given the acting rank of Captain from 11 June, 1917. He would be praised for his leadership in managing the consequences of the Halifax Explosion.[3]

After the war, Eldridge was promoted the Captain (retired) in recognition of war service, this date being adjusted to 11 November, 1918.[4]
