Ten Provence class ironclads were completed for the French Navy during the second half of the 1860s.

Design & Construction

The ten Provences were ordered on 16 November, 1860, and were intended as improved versions of the Gloire. Their design was drawn up by Dupuy de Lôme. All were wooden-hulled except for the Héroïne, which was built of iron.[1]
