Rear-Admiral John Luce, C.B. (4 February 1870 – 22 September 1932) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
He was appointed to the training ship Britannia as a Naval Cadet on 15 January, 1883. He was appointed to the Minotaur in the Channel Squadron on 24 December, 1884, and rated Midshipman on 15 February, 1885. He was appointed to the Iron Duke on 20 September by the Vice-Admiral Commanding, and on 2 November was appointed to the Audacious on the China Station. He was ordered home on 9 November, 1887, to join the Training Squadron, being appointed to the Volage on 16 May, 1888.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant dated 1 January, 1892.[1]
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1903.[2]
Captain
Luce was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1909. From 5 October to 28 January, 1910, he was appointed to President for the War Course, where he was placed third out of eleven captain in order of merit.[3]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Hibernia on 19 October, 1910, paying her off on 22 January, 1912.[4]
He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Glasgow on 17 September, 1912[5] and fought in her at the Battle of Coronel and the Battle of the Falkland Islands. He was appointed Commodore, Second Class on 1 January, 1916,[6] as Senior Naval officer on the East Coast of South America.
On 11 January, 1917, Luce was appointed Commodore, Second Class, in command of the Royal Naval Air Service's Central Depot and Training Establishment at Cranwell, and was superseded on 1 April, 1918. He was then appointed to Egmont as Commodore, Second Class, for Special Service, and to President for the same on 8 October.[7]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Ramillies on 1 February, 1919.[8]
