U.S.S. Porpoise was one of seven Plunger (or "A") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy. She commissioned at the Holland Torpedo Boatyard at New Suffolk, New York on 19 September, 1903, with Lieutenant Charles P. Nelson in command.

Porpoise was redesignated A-6 on 17 November, 1911.
