U.S.S. Holland was America's first submarine, and the archetype for early British and Japanese efforts in undersea warfare.
Launched in 1897, she was purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1900 and was commissioned that 12 October with Lieutenant Harry H. Caldwell in command.
