Captain Alexander Henry Maxwell-Hyslop, A.M. (25 May, 1895 – 28 August, 1978) served in the Royal Navy. He added the hyphen to his name by means of a deed poll in 1925.

Life & Career

The son of COlonel Hyslop of the Royal Engineers.

Hyslop was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1917.

Hyslop was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 January, 1925.

Hyslop served as a R.N.A.S. airship pilot during the Great War. As a young man, he was the Grand Fleet's heavyweight boxing champion, though he was himself a light heavyweight.

He was awarded the Albert Medal for his conduct when an 8-in gun turret in Devonshire exploded in the manoeuvres of 1929.

Maxwell-Hyslop was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1930.

Maxwell-Hyslop was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1937.

World War II

He commanded the Torpoint shore establishment H.M.S. Raleigh from January, 1945 to June, 1946.

Family

His son Robin would become a Member of Parliament for Tiverton.
