Like Harry Truman, Impey seems to have had no middle name. The ''Annual Register'' of the U.S. Naval Academy for the 1865-1866 academic year lists him as Robert Impey, despite other Academy students having their middle initials listed, and the ''Register of Officers'' for 1903, which lists the full names of Navy officers, gives his name as Robert E. Impey.{{USNAReg1866|p. 9}}{{USOfficerReg1903|p. 98}}
