The Bureau of Steam Engineering was an organization within the U.S. Navy responsible for the engines and boilers of ships.
History
The Bureau was established on 5 July, 1862 by act of Congress alongside the Bureau of Navigation and the Bureau of Construction and Repair.[1]

The duties of the Bureau of Steam Engineering shall comprise all that relates to designing, building, fitting out, and repairing the steam machinery used for the propulsion of naval ships; the steam pumps, steam heaters, distilling apparatus, all steam connections of ships, and the steam machinery necessary for actuating the apparatus by which turrets are turned; also to requiring for or manufacturing all equipage and supplies for ships prescribed by the authorized allowance tables.
