H.M.S. Active was one of three Volage Class corvettes completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Commissioned at Portsmouth on 13 April, 1877 for service on the Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa.[6]
Re-commissioned at Portsmouth 21 September, 1885.[7]
In February, 1888, she was flagship on the Training Squadron, bearing Commodore in Command, Albert H. Markham.[8]
Active participated in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890 under the command of Captain Armand Temple Powlett as part of a Reserve Fleet of the force representing the Royal Navy, headquartered in the Downs.[9]
The vessel participated in the Jubilee Naval Review and possibly the Annual Manoeuvres of 1897.[10]
In June 1906, she was listed for sale at a July 10th Portsmouth auction of "Obsolete War Vessels and Other Craft" as "Lot 1".[11]
