Commander (retired) Arthur Maurice Yate Dane, R.N. (17 November, 1885 – 27 August, 1953) served in the Royal Navy. One of his Service Records spells his last name as "Danes".
Life & Career
Born in Lahore.[1]
After failing his gunnery examinations in December 1906, he passed and obtained a third class certificate in May 1907.[2]
Dane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1908.[3]
Dane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1916.[4]
He would soon enough become a commander of special service, or "Q" ships, being first appointed in command of Q.16 on 28 February, 1917.[5]
He was appointed in command of Q.3 on 7 April, 1917. He remained in command when she was renamed Barranca on 5 May. On 15 May, he was appointed to H.M.S. Vivid for Glenmay, to take command upon her commissioning. She was renamed Starmount on 28 July 1917. He left command of her on 21 May, 1918 and was appointed in command of the ex-collier Santee, to take command upon her commissioning as a "Q" ship. She was renamed Bendish at some point, and he commanded her until 15 February, 1919.[6]
Dane was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 17 October, 1920 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander on 17 November, 1925.[7]
