Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. (retired) Stephen Hudson Smiles, O.B.E., R.N.R. (3 January, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Smiles was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Ebro from 13 April 1915 to 14 December 1917, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 July, 1916. On 15 December, he was appointed in command of the Heather.[1]

Smiles was cautioned by the Commander-in-Chief, Coast of Ireland to ensure proper lookouts being stationed in future, following a 2 December 1918 collision between H.M.S. Heather and the sailing vessel Janice[?].[2]

Smiles was demobilised on 27 July 1919, post-dated to 31 July, and was eventually placed on the Retired List owing to non-sea service on 25 September, 1922 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 1 July, 1924.[3]

World War II

Smiles worked as a Consular Shipping Advisor at Buenos Aires.
