Captain (retired) Herbert John Anthony Throckmorton (11 June, 1871 – 1 January, 1941) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Throckmorton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 January, 1898. He next served in Prince George and Majestic.[1]

Throckmorton was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Commander on 11 June, 1916. On 7 September, he was appointed in command of the sweeping sloop Sunflower.[2]

In November 1916 he was informed that he had conducted himself in a commendable fashion while in command of Sunflower while in action against an enemy submarine. He also brought the Norwegian S.S. Gista[?] into Queenstown under difficult weather conditions.[3]

In April 1917 he was castigated for crossing a prohibited area in the North Channel in Sunflower. His excuse was deemed inadequate, and told this pointed to carelessness and neglect to obey orders.[4]

Throckmorton was appointed in command of the monitor Havelock on 16 June, 1917.[5]

Throckmorton was promoted to the rank of Captain in recognition of services rendered during the war with seniority of 11 November, 1918.[6]
