Born in Ireland.

Archdale was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1902.[1]

On 28 February, 1919, he was appointed in command of the depot ship Greenwich.[6] Archdale was married on 22 July, 1920 and became Senior Naval Officer, Copenhagen where Rear-Admiral (D) Hodges found his work very satisfactory, despite having little idea what Archdale was doing![7]

He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Ceres in February, 1924.

In December, 1928, he was appointed in command of the battleship Malaya.

Archdale was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 7 October, 1929.[8]
