Captain Edward Lyon Berthon, D.S.O., D.S.C.* (15 September, 1894 – 23 October, 1941) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
In mid-May 1912, he was appointed to the battleship Agamemnon oif the Second Battle Squadron. On 2 April 1915 he was sent to the destroyer Racoon. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1916, and left Racoon on 15 September 1917 when he was appointed to the new "V" Class destroyer Vanquisher. He left her after just one month, however, for Pelican.
Berthon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1924.
Berthon was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1929.
Berthon was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1937.
World War II
Berthon was mentioned in Despatches for "good services in the withdrawal of the Allied Armies from the beaches at Dunkirk between 27th May – 4th June 1940."
Berthon was appointed in command of the destroyer Cossack on 10 July, 1941. She was torpedoed on 23 October 1941 while escorting a convoy from Gibraltar to Britain and sank four days later on 27 October. 159 men were lost, including Berthon.
