Commander Charles Augustine Brand, (11 May, 1868 – 17 October, 1913) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Brand was born in Connecticut and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1899.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 1 July, 1891. [2]
Spanish-American War
During the war, Brand served as Executive Officer on the armed supply ship Mangrove and was involved in the last, minor, naval action of the conflict.[3]
Later Career
Brand was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 3 March, 1899.[4] He was further promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1905.[5]
He was appointed Executive Officer of protected cruiser Boston from 1905 into 1907.[6][7] In 1909, he was appointed Commandant of the Naval Station at Culebra, Puerto Rico, with concurrent duty in command of gunboat Alliance, then serving as the stations hip at Culebra. He remained in command until August, 1911, having been promoted to the rank of Commander on 7 November, 1910.[8][9]
Brand's last assignment came when he was appointed to command supply ship Glacier in 1911. However, he was relieved of command due to ill health in early 1912.[10]
Placed on the retired list due to incapacity in the line of service on 9 May, 1912,[11] Brand died by suicide the following year in Colchester, Connecticut.[12]
