Pendant Number: | L.22[1] |
Builder: | Vickers[2] |
Ordered: | December, 1916[3] |
Launched: | 25 Oct, 1919[4] |
Sold: | Aug, 1935[5] |
H.M.S. L 22 was one of thirty-five "L" class submarines completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
L 22 was withdrawn from the Second Submarine Flotilla to reserve on 1 November, 1924, to be followed shortly by L 23. They would be replaced in service by L 53 and L 71.[6]
L 22 completed to full complement on 3 April, 1925.[7]
From at least mid-1927 through at least mid-1934 she was with the Fifth Submarine Flotilla, having been brought to full complement on 1 June, 1933.[8][9]
By early 1933, she was one of three "L" class boats comprising Group "Y" Submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth under the collective command of Lieutenant-Commander John Pollington Apps.[10]
In 1934, her bell, inscribed with her name and perhaps her motto, was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at a price between £1 and £5. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[11]
